Mid-Morning Prayer (Terce)

INTRODUCTION
O God, come to our aid.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

Hymn
Come, Holy Spirit, live in us
With God the Father and the Son,
And grant us your abundant grace
To sanctify and make us one.
May mind and tongue made strong in love
Your praise throughout the world proclaim,
And may that love within our hearts
Set fire to others with its flame.
Most blessèd Trinity of love,
For whom the heart of man was made,
To you be praise in timeless song,
And everlasting homage paid.

PSALMS OF THE DAY

Psalm 118(119): 17-24

Take the veil from my eyes, Lord, that I may see the wonders of your law.
Be good to your servant, and I shall live
  and keep to your teachings.
Uncover my eyes
and I shall see the wonders of your law.
My home is on the earth
but do not hide your commands from me.
My soul is weary with longing,
day and night, for your decrees.
You have rebuked the proud, they are accursed
because they turn from your commands.
Save me from scorn and contempt,
for I have kept your decrees.
Princes enthroned may speak against me,
but your servant will still follow your judgements.
For your decrees are my delight,
and your statutes are my counsellors.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Take the veil from my eyes, Lord, that I may see the wonders of your law.

Psalm 24 (25)
A plea for pardon and salvation

Lord, guide me in your truth.
To you, Lord, I lift up my soul.
My God, I trust you, I shall not be ashamed.
Do not let my enemies triumph.
No-one who trusts you should lose by it.
Let the losers be the faithless traitors
  who break their word pointlessly.
Lord, show me your ways
  and teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
since you are the God of my salvation
and I hope in you all the day long.
Remember your mercies, O Lord:
  remember your loving kindness
  since the beginning of time.
The sins of my youth and my crimes
  – forget them all, O Lord.
Your mercy is great, so remember me.
Lord, remember me in your goodness.
The Lord is upright and gentle,
and he will teach sinners good ways.
He will guide the humble in his judgements;
he will teach the meek his ways.
All the ways of the Lord are kindness and faithfulness
to those who keep his covenant
  and obey his decrees.
For the sake of your name, O Lord,
you will not be angry at my sins
  for they are so many.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Lord, guide me in your truth.

Psalm 24 (25)

Pity me, Lord, as you see me friendless and forlorn.
Who is the man who fears the Lord?
The Lord will teach him the path to choose.
His soul will live in prosperity:
his children will inherit the land.
The Lord is close to those who fear him
  in fulfilment of his covenant.
My eyes are turned to the Lord
for he frees my feet from the snare.
Look down on me and take pity,
for I am alone and a pauper.
Loosen the bonds of my heart,
  rescue me from my need.
See my lowliness, see how I labour,
  and forgive all my sins.
See my enemies, how many they are,
and the hatred they have for me.
Guard my life and rescue me:
I will not be ashamed, for I hope in you.
May innocence and justice guard me,
since my hope is in you.
O God, free Israel
  from all its troubles.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Pity me, Lord, as you see me friendless and forlorn.

COMPLEMENTARY PSALMS

Psalm 119 (120)
Longing for peace

I called and the Lord answered me.
I was in trouble, and cried to the Lord;
  and he answered me.
Lord, free me from the lips of liars,
  from deceitful tongues.
What will be given you, what will you receive,
  deceitful tongue?
Sharp arrows from the warrior,
  hardened in the flames.
Alas, I am an exile in Meshech;
I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
My soul has lived too long
  with those who hate peace.
I am for making peace;
but whenever I spoke, they attacked me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
I called and the Lord answered me.

Psalm 120 (121)
The guardian of the people

May the Lord guard your going in and coming out.
I shall lift my eyes to the hills:
where is my help to come from?
My help will come from the Lord,
  who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip:
he will not doze, your guardian.
Behold, he will not doze or sleep,
  the guardian of Israel.
The Lord is your guardian, the Lord is your shade;
he is at your right hand.
By day the sun will not strike you;
  nor the moon by night.
The Lord will guard you from all harm;
the Lord will guard your life.
The Lord will guard your coming and your going
  both now and for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
May the Lord guard your going in and coming out.

Psalm 121 (122)
Jerusalem, the holy city

I rejoiced in the things which were said to me.
They filled me with joy when they said,
“We will go to the house of the Lord.”
Now our feet are standing
  within your gates, Jerusalem.
Jerusalem, built as a city,
  whole and self-contained:
there the tribes have gone up,
the tribes of the Lord –
the witness of Israel,
  to praise the Lord’s name.
For there are the thrones of justice,
the thrones of the house of David.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“Safety for those who care for you,
peace inside your walls,
  security within your ramparts!”
For my brethren and those near to me I will say
  “Peace be upon you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will call blessings upon you.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
I rejoiced in the things which were said to me.

CONCLUSION

Scripture ReadingAmos 4:13
He it was who formed the mountains, created the wind, reveals his mind to man, makes both dawn and dark, and walks on the top of the heights of the world; the Lord, the God of Hosts, is his name.

℣. All things the Lord has made, bless the Lord.
℟. Give glory and eternal praise to him.

Let us pray.
Lord, who at this third hour
bestowed the gift of the Holy Spirit on the apostles
  while they were at prayer,
grant us a share in the same grace.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Let us praise the Lord.
– Thanks be to God.
